Between roughly 1900 and 1915, early sections of Ocean City's Boardwalk became the town's oceanfront promenade. Municipal histories note that those first boards were not permanent: they were taken up and stored outside the summer season.
Postcards turned the Boardwalk into a portable image of Ocean City. Hotels, bathing beaches, signs, and crowds could travel home in a suitcase, extending the resort's identity far beyond Worcester County.
